Mitsubishi Motors Thailand hands over solar system of ‘Solar for Lives’ project to the second hospital

CHIANG RAI – June 13, 2022: Phaya Mengrai Hospital in Phaya Meng Rai district of Chiang Rai province is the second community hospital to receive solar panels from Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) Co., Ltd. as part of the company's ‘Solar for Lives’ environmental project, which aims to increase opportunities for Thai people to access public health services by ensuring stable electricity from solar systems at community hospitals throughout Thailand.

“Mitsubishi Motors Thailand is committed to enhancing the environment in Thailand and supporting the country towards carbon neutrality. We are delighted that the 'Solar for Lives' initiative is continuing to safeguard the environment while simultaneously improving healthcare access for Thais living near Phaya Mengrai Hospital in Chiang Rai's northern region. The project has been initiated through a strong partnership among the company and state agencies, including the Ministry of Public Health, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO: public organization), that set to achieve our mutual target which is to support the installation of solar system for approximately 40 community hospitals nationwide within the next 10 years. Under this initiative, Mitsubishi Motors Thailand is responsible for solar system installation and yearly maintenance” Mr. Eiichi Koito, President and CEO said during his remarks at the handover ceremony.

Mitsubishi Motors Thailand donated the second solar system, as part of ‘Solar for Lives’ project, to Phaya Mengrai Hospital in Chaing Rai province after handing over the first solar system to Namphong Hospital in northeastern province of Khon Kaen in April 2022.

“The community hospitals, including Phaya Mengrai Hospital, were chosen to have the solar system due to their urgent need to expand their facilities to accommodate more patients, as well as the hospital's location with a strong sunlight which benefits solar panels by allowing them to produce power more efficiently. We are certain that the solar system will improve the well-being of local communities while also raising environmental awareness,” Mr. Koito explained.

According to Mr. Koito, the flagship electric car – Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – was also lent to Phaya Mengrai Hospital for medical service. It is an environmentally friendly vehicle that can provide a maximum 1,500 watts to electronic appliances for outdoor activities. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV doesn’t only provide a reliable source of electricity in an emergency or blackout, but it can also be an alternative option for medical personnel who travel to nearby communities in a 20-kilometer range to provide medical treatments, as the vehicle has an electric-only range of up to 55 kilometers in addition to a hybrid range of over 500 kilometers.

“We are grateful for Mitsubishi Motors Thailand's and the project's partners' support in supplying solar panels to our hospital. Also, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will undoubtedly assist the hospital in reducing its fuel costs and assisting medical staff in one of our key healthcare operations which is a daily visit to patients who live in nearby communities but are unable to travel due to their physical conditions, such as bed-ridden patients who require oxygen, the elderly with bone and joint issues, and HIV-infected patients,” M.D. Amphawan Srikrutranant, Phaya Mengrai Hospital Director said.

“The project indirectly increases the effectiveness of our healthcare services by cutting our electricity and fuel expenses and ensuring constant and stable power. We are delighted to be a part of this initiative, and I reiterate our shared aim of enhancing quality of life of Thai people and ensuring the long-term development of the healthcare sector,” M.D. Amphawan added.

Phaya Mengrai Hospital currently has 60 patient beds with a capacity of serving around 400 outpatients and 10 inpatients per day. About 59 medical team consists of 7 doctors, and 52 medical personnel are working at Phaya Mengrai Hospital to provide healthcare services to community members.

Mitsubishi Motors Thailand has pledged to help Thailand achieve its environmental objective of being carbon neutral. There are a variety of green programs in place to minimize carbon emissions throughout the manufacturing process, including reforestation and the development of the Outlander PHEV, an electric vehicle that debuted in Thailand in 2020. At the Laem Chabang facility in Chon Buri, the largest manufacturing hub outside of Japan, the company has also installed rooftop solar panels with a capability of reducing carbon emissions by around 6,100 tons per year.
