Mitsubishi Motors Thailand and MMTh Engine has been carrying out environmentally-friendly operations in its various facilities with the aim to reduce waste, energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The initiatives include waterborne painting with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and building wastewater treatment systems in line with the 3Rs of waste management — Reduce, Reuse and Recycle — to lower raw water usage and wastewater discharge.
Additionally, solar panels were installed on the factories’ roofs with the aim to reduce more than 6,100 tons of CO2 emissions each year. Under ‘Solar for Lives’ project, the company will also install solar power systems in 40 community hospitals within the next 10 years.
Since 2011, the Ministry of Industry’s Green Industry project has helped to make a good and reliable image of the industrial sector, gain people’s trust and build a green economy. The ministry sees that it is time to further develop, improve and create awareness among the industrial sector on the effects on environment, so that environment and industry can coexist sustainably.
The green industry project by the Ministry of Industry is based on voluntary commitment from businesses that aim to operate in a community and environmentally-friendly manner, towards sustainable development. This is implemented through a systematic approach consisting of five levels.
To provide practical guidance for promoting and developing green industries among local businesses that align with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) policy and framework, the ministry has integrated the principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) and the Triple Bottom Line (economic, social, and environmental balance) as the foundation of ‘Green Industry’, based on two key pillars – continuous improvement and sustainable development of organizations. In recognition of the industrial businesses’ commitment, The Thai government awards the Green Industry Award to businesses for operating with environmental responsibility and pursuing the path towards sustainability.
