Be at One with Nature in Visit to Sahakorn Nikom Mine as Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Brings You to Kanchanaburi

Amazing Road Trips with the All New Pajero Sport brings fans of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport to Kanchanaburi Province. Not to be missed is definitely the bridge over the Kwai River but we’ll also be bringing you to the recently-unveiled attraction like Tambon Sahakorn Nikom in Thong Pha Phum District where you can experience old mining tunnels, climb Thailand’s Everest, and soak in the scenery from Nern Sawan.

ข้อมูลแนะนำสถานที่

Most of the areas in Tambon Sahakorn Nikom remains pristine. There are plenty of attractions such as the century-old mining tunnel in the mountain that runs 2 kilometers long. Kanchanaburi also has a sea of mist to experience on Nern Sawan. Thailand’s Everest refers to Khao Luk Song which has an abundance of minerals and mining tunnels. To gain access to those tunnels, miners have to hoist themselves up the hill using just ropes, which seems as hard as hikers making their way up the Everest.

The bridge over the Kwai River has a historical importance. The bridge was built during World War II using prisoner of war labor as ordered by the Japanese Army, which wanted to build a railroad into Myanmar to send supplies. The railroad needed a bridge across the Kwai River so one was built in just one month and it was opened for use on December 25, 1943. The bridge was bombed in November 1944 but the Thai government reinforced it with steel in 1946 and it has been put into use until today. Currently, the bridge is considered a symbol of peace. And if you want the best view of the bridge, head over to Krasae Cave, which is a lethal beauty because it cuts through rock cliffs and has a sharp drop into the Kwai Noi River.

Fun in the Sun

  • If you want to view the mining tunnel, contact the Sahakorn Nikom municipality first because the interior is pitch black, has water trickling through all the time, and has periodic rock falls. You can hire locals’ pick-up trucks to take you inside for 1,000-1,500 Baht. You’ll be equipped with a hard hat that has a spotlight and a guide and the tour would take 2 hours.
  • With clear skies, you can see the whole of Sahakorn Niyom from Nern Sawan, which also boasts a sea of mist in the morning.
  • Another good way to take in the view of the death railway and the bridge across the Kwai River is to take the train along that route. The State Railway Authority of Thailand operates 26 trips daily along the route from 8 AM to 6 PM. Tickets cost 20 Baht and a round-trip takes about half an hour. Do book your tickets in advance and if you need more information, call 1690.

Travel Tips

  • Tambon Sahakorn Nikom has homestays available or you can camp out at Nern Sawan to view the morning mist. Along the bride over the Kwai River, you can find plenty of accommodations including rafts for hire which can be fun if you’re in a large group.
  • Do take extra caution while walking on the rail tracks. Don’t run, play, push anyone, or climb the rails because it is a sheer drop into the river from the bridge.

How to Get There

To get to Sahakorn Nikom from the downtown area of Kanchanaburi, take Highway no. 323 along the route to Pa Sawan. You’ll come across the mining tunnel as your first stop. The Everest hill is just 300 meters from the tunnel while Nern Sawan is a bit farther away. To get to the bridge over the Kwai River, use Saengchuto Road from the downtown area and turn left onto Kwai Yai Road. You’ll see signs giving you directions. Use Highway no. 323, heading towards Saiyoke District, to get to Krasae Cave. Make a left at Mahidol University’s Kanchanaburi Campus and you’ll arrive at your destination.

Safe Driving Tips

Our trip with the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport to Kanchanaburi during the rainy season will utilize the 4-wheel drive system, using 4H (4WD HIGH-RANGE) to increase traction and safety.
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport’s Active Traction Control will help to further increase your traction and prevent your tires from losing contact with the road. This is especially helpful on slippery roads, gravelly surfaces, or steep inclines.
