Travel to Khao Kho in Petchaboon Province with the Amazing Road Trips with All New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. What’s good there? You’ll get to see windmills at the Khao Kho wind farm, as well as the Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaew and the Khao Kho Sacrificial Monument. Let’s see how amazing these places are.

Get to Know Our Destination

The Khao Kho wind farm is located on an area of 350 rai and uses GE Thailand Company’s technology. There are a total of 24 windmills that are 110 meters in height. The windmills do not create much noise pollution since each emits less than 50 decibel of noise and can produce 60 megawatts of electricity or 140 million units a year. It has been in operation since May 2016 and apart from generating electricity for the province, it has also brought in tourism revenue.

Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaew is surrounded by mountains on all sides and right on top exists a cave with a legend. It was said that villagers saw a glass globe floating in the sky and disappearing into the cave, which they interpreted to be a visit from the holy relics of the Lord Buddha and hence the name Pha Son Kaew or cliff which hides the glass globe. From then on, it was believed that this area is consecrated ground. The Khao Kho Sacrificial Monument was constructed as a monument for civilians, soldiers, and police who lose their lives to protect the border between Phitsanulok, Petchaboon, and Loei from communists from 1968-1982. The monument is a triangular slab of marble that is 24 meters in height, signifying the Buddhist year of 2524 or 1981 when civilians, soldiers, and police held a joint operation to crack down on the communists for good. The interior wall is inscribed with a description of the fight and the names of those who lost their lives.

Fun in the Sun

  • With the serene atmosphere and scenic views, Wat Phra That Son Kaew is the ideal spot for meditation of every kind.
  • Khao Kho is another area in Petchaboon where you can view the stunning sea of mist.
  • If you are an adrenaline junkie, there are many adventure parks in the area where you can enjoy activities set in a natural environment.

Travel Tips

  • Khao Kho can be visited all year round as the temperature remains comfortable even during summer from mid-February to May. It can get chilly from November to mid-February with the mercury at an average of 18-25 degrees Celsius. The rainy season commences in mid-May to October, which is the time when the sea of mist is most visible. You’ll also be able to enjoy the lush greenery at that time.
  • Because each attraction in this area is quite a distance from each other, for your utmost convenience, you should drive your Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. The road uphill can be steep and curved so make sure you check your vehicle’s brake and tires before embarking on your trip. If you’re not adept at driving on winding roads, you can hire a local songtaew or pick-up trucks to take you to the attractions.
  • Khao Kho has a huge variety of accommodations to choose from depending on your budget and the experience you desire. Camping is very convenient as there are toilets and restaurants widely available within the national park’s premises or camping areas provided by private providers. You can bring your own tent or hire one in the area but make sure you book your accommodations well in advance.

How to Get There

To reach the Khao Kho Sacrificial Monument, drive your Mitsubishi Pajero Sport up Khao Kho for about 25 kilometers. Once you see a sign for the monument, turn left and you’ll arrive at your destination. Wat Phra Tha Pha Son Kaew is a further drive from the monument. Because the road is a one-way road, turn left once you arrive at the intersection with Highway no. 12 and you’ll see a sign directing you to the temple. To go to the Khao Kho wind farm, drive back the way you came from on Highway 2196. Drive straight through the Camp Son three-way intersection and you’ll come across Highway 2305 for Ban Tung Samor. If you have a GPS system, direct it to the GB strawberry farm. The wind farm is located right next door. The road is very scenic but has a lot of turns so do drive carefully.

Safe Driving Tips

Our trip with the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport to Khao Kho during the rainy season will utilize the 4- wheel drive system, using 4H (4WD HIGH-RANGE) to increase traction and safety.
Despite the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport’s large size, its turning radius is a mere 5.6 meters which makes it easy for you to tackle any sharp turns on the mountain.
