All New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Visit Thailand’s Taj Mahal in Hat Yai

Hat Yai District in Songkhla Province is considered an important commercial and transportation hub for the South because all goods and tourists have to pass through this area before heading for the southern border provinces to Malaysia. Amazing Road Trips by the All New Pajero would like to take you all to visit Hat Yai’s attractions, which include the Songkhla Central Mosque and Khao Kho Hong. Let’s go!

Get to Know Our Destination

Plans for the construction of the Songkhla Central Mosque began as early as 1991 because the province lacked a central mosque like other provinces and the Songkhla Islamic Committee also lacked an office. However, it wasn’t easy to request a construction budget and it wasn’t until 1999 that 5 individuals donated a 5-rai plot of land for the construction. Two years later, the first budget for the construction was finally approved and construction was completed in 2005. A year later, a major fund-raising effort was carried out to add to the construction for more grandeur befitting the status of a central mosque, which resulted in the beautiful structure seen today.

Khao Kho Hong is located in the Hat Yai Municipal Park and is the district’s last remaining forest. The hill is 371 meters above sea level and spans an area of 2,600 rai. Khao Kho Hong is Hat Yai’s major attraction, boasting a wide variety of foliage and wildlife. It is also the location of the Phra Buddha Mongkol Maharaj, the South’s tallest standing Buddha statue at 19.9 meters. The statue’s name was bestowed by His Majesty the King and is considered the city’s main Buddha statue. The area also houses a white jade statue of the Guan Yin goddess in the south and the Phra Prom Shrine.

Fun in the Sun

  • The Songkhla Central Mosque should be visited in the evening because the spotlight on the mosque with the setting sun in the background makes for a visually stunning image, befitting the status of Taj Mahal of Thailand

  • The Hat Yai Municipal Park has a variety of activities to choose from. Apart from paying respect to the Phra Buddha Mongkol Maharaj statue, the white jade Guan Yin statue, and the Phra Prom Shrine, you can also capture an aerial view of Hat Yai with the morning mist or the setting sun as a background or even the city lights during the night.

  • Khao Kho Hong is also the location of Thailand’s first and only cable car to the Phra Buddha Mongkol Maharaj statue and the Phra Prom Shrine. Tickets are 100 Baht for adults and 50 Baht for students. There are currently 2 carriages in operation, running a distance of 525 meters for a duration of 2.30 minutes. Each carriage can carry 8 people.

Travel Tips

  • In visiting the Songkhla Central Mosque, as is with a visit to any religious site, you should cover up and dress appropriately.

  • If you want to pay respect on Khao Kho Hong, you can purchase candles, joss sticks, and flowers in the area. There will be staff on hand to inform you of the procedure.

  • Hat Yai’s rainy season runs from November to January so the best time to visit is from February to April when the weather is nice and cool.

How to Ge There

To travel to the Songkhla Central Mosque from the downtown area in Hat Yai, head north on Lopburi Ramet Road for 10 kilometers. From there to Khao Kho Hong, you have to drive south using the Sudsai-Mattawang Uthit Road for about 18 kilometers. Go in using the third entrance and go up using the gallery entrance.

Safe Driving Tips

For this rainy season, wet and slippery roads are unavoidable so our trip with the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in Hat Yai will utilize the 4-wheel drive system, using 4H (4WD HIGH-RANGE) to increase traction and safety with the constant rain that makes the roads slippery.
In driving up and down the Khao Kho Hong, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport’s Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control will help you start your car on a descent and drive downhill more safely and confidently.
