Study Vietnamese Culture in Thailand, Pay Respect to Ancient Temples with the All New Pajero sport

Nakhon Phanom Province has close ties with Vietnam due to a large presence of Vietnamese people who fled political and religious persecution during the Vietnam War. One of those is former President Ho Chi Minh. Apart from this interesting history, Nakhon Phanom also houses several important religious sites, whether it be the Phra That Phanom, the Phra That Renu Nakhon, or the Saint Anna Nongsaeng Church. Let’s get going with Amazing Road Trips with All New Pajero sport.

Get to Know Our Destination

Phra That Phanom is located within the Phra That Phanom Temple on the banks of the Mekhong River. This religious site is the most ancient in all of the Northeast. It was said that the decorations were actually crafted by Indra and the angels. The bricks used to build the relic has carvings of ancient kings crafted by local artisans and marks the Dvaravati era. It is believed that it was built between 600 to 800 B.C. but the Phra That Phanom itself collapsed on August 11, 1975 due to a heavy storm and its old age. Construction of a new one to replace it was completed on March 23, 1979.

Phra That Renu Nakhon is a smaller replica of the Phra That Phanom and was built in 1918. It is 35 meters in height and 8.37 meters in width with entrances on all four sides. The inside houses the Tripitaka, a gold Buddha statue, a silver Buddha statue, valuables, and regalia of high-ranking local officials.

The Saint Anna Nongsaeng Church is another ancient and beautiful church in the country. It was constructed in 1910 and symbolizes the melting pot of the Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, and Laotian living together in harmony. The architecture is colonial style. Our last stop is Ban Na Jok or also known as Ho Chi Minh’s house. Uncle Ho fled the Vietnam War to live in Thailand between 1924-1931 at his friend’s house in Nakhon Phanom but had to move and change his name many times to avoid prosecution. This house has a lot of trees planted by him and also has exhibits of his personal items.

Fun in the Sun

  • Phra That Phanom is the religious site that those born in the year of the monkey and those born on Sundays should pay respect to. It is believed that paying respect here once in your life will bring auspiciousness so don’t miss the chance.
  • Phra That Renu Nakhon is the religious site for those born on Mondays. It is believed that paying respect here will bring beauty like the moon.
  • Renu Nakhon is a community of the Phu Thai people who still preserve their local culture very closely, such as the ceremony to welcome visitors, the banquet for visitors, smoking the local herb, the Phu Thai dance, and local souvenir shops so do leave enough time for your visit.

Travel Tips

  • Nakhon Phanom has a variety of accommodations at different prices which are mostly affordable. If you’d like chic lodgings, try booking accommodations by the Mekhong River.
  • Nakhon Phanom has a long history and people are still immersed in ancient traditions so here is a good place to try wearing sarongs, particularly when giving alms in the morning.
  • There are other religious sites in the province worth visiting for those born on all seven days of the week so take your pick for auspiciousness.

How to Get There

To get to Phra That Phanom Temple from Nakhon Phanom, drive straight to That Phanom District on Highway 212 and you’ll reach the temple. From the city center to Ho Chi Minh’s house, head for Sakhon Nakhon Province via Highway 22. You’ll come across a bend with a sign for the Thai-Vietnamese Friendship Village. Drive in that direction and you’ll see signs for Ban Na Jok. From there, you’ll come across President Ho Chi Minh’s Museum before arriving at Ho Chi Minh’s house. The Saint Anna Nongsaeng Church is next to the Nakhon Phanom governor’s mansion on the left.

Safe Driving Tips

In driving your All New Pajero sport to Nakhon Phanom, you’re recommended to use the 4H (4WD HIGH-RANGE) to increase traction if driving at high speed, on slippery roads after the rain, when taking sharp turns, or up a steep incline.
Driving up the mountain with a lot of sharp turns requires great concentration and both hands on the wheels but you can leave the rest up to the All New Pajero sport. The vehicle comes with an automatic windshield wiper that comes on at the slowest speed once rain falls if you are traveling beyond 60 kilometers per hour and stops by itself if your speed drops below 60 kilometers per hour. The indicator light will also come on three times with a light touch of the indicator light stick. A speed above 15 kilometers will automatically lock the doors. With emergency braking, the emergency light will turn on automatically to warn the car following you.
